Ecuador campaign focuses on sustainability

Ecuador is promoting its sustainability profile as part of a new European marketing campaign.

The initiative, which runs through December, includes meetings with professionals, newsletters, presentations, press releases, media interviews, fam trips, and the tourist board’s participation in events such as the “World Travel Market” in London in November.

The destination was also represented at the “Lata Expo” last month and at the “Global Birdfair” – an international bird-watching event in Rutland earlier this month – and at a gastronomic event on July 14 at the Embassy of Ecuador in London.

"The main message is that Ecuador is a sustainable destination, a leader in the region, in the new type of tourism: more natural, intense, and inclusive."

Santiago Granda, head of the International Promotion Department at the Ministry of Tourism, said participation in the “Lata Expo” in London helped “consolidate” Ecuador’s presence in the British and European markets.

“The main message is that Ecuador is a sustainable destination, a leader in the region, in the new type of tourism: more natural, intense, and inclusive,” he commented.

According to him, the ministry sees a “close and lasting relationship” with the British trade as “vital” since the United Kingdom is the fourth most important European market in terms of arrivals.

In 2019, over 28,000 British tourists visited the South American country, dropping to less than 2,500 in 2021 due to the pandemic. Over half of British holidaymakers participate in adventurous tourism activities – and half plan their trip more than five months in advance.

Flights to the capital Quito are available with airlines such as “Iberia” and “Air Europa” via Madrid or with “KLM” via Amsterdam. Other options are stopovers in Bogota (Colombia), Panama, or the USA.

Among the most visited provinces are Pichincha – near the capital – and Galápagos.

The plan aims to increase foreign exchange earnings from inbound tourism from seven hundred and five million to US$2.4 billion and to increase arrivals from 469,000 to 2 million between 2020 and 2025.
