“Amazon Web Services” wants to invest more in Chile and Latin America

Amazon Web Services (AWS) expects sustained growth in Chile and the rest of Latin America in the coming years, despite ongoing political unrest, a senior executive told Reuters.

“In the future, we plan to invest more and expand our physical presence in Chile to the extent that customers demand and request it to meet their needs,” said Jaime Valles, vice president for Latin America, declining to comment on the investment amount.

AWS is a US cloud computing provider founded in 2006 as a subsidiary of the online shipping retailer Amazon.com. Numerous popular services such as Dropbox, Netflix, Foursquare, and Reddit rely on the services of “Amazon Web Services”.

On Wednesday, July 27, the company announced that it had begun obtaining an environmental permit to construct a US$205 million data center in Chile's capital, Santiago.

In 2017, Gartner ranked AWS as the leading international provider in cloud computing.

Last year, the company opened secure connections to the global AWS network, known as edge sites, in Argentina and Chile, in addition to existing sites in Brazil and Colombia.

Starting in 2022, AWS plans to open thirty new “AWS Local Zones” that will include infrastructure, storage, and database services in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Brazil.
