Chile and Bolivia reactivate Road Map after 48 years without diplomatic relations

The Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola, held a bilateral meeting with her Bolivian counterpart, Rogelio Mayta, to reaffirm their commitment to building a mutual trust plan.

At the meeting, held in Paraguay on the occasion of the 60th Summit of the Heads of State Parties and the Associated States of Mercosur, the need to initiate a new stage in the negotiations between the two countries was discussed.

Chile and Bolivia have not had diplomatic relations since 1978. They have only maintained consular ties.

In this sense, both countries agreed to reactivate the Road Map agreed upon last year in La Paz. They also hope to resume talks on economic complementation.

Finally, both Secretaries of State stressed the importance of deepening dialogue in areas of mutual interest.

Last April, Chile and Bolivia presented their arguments before the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the dispute over the Silala River.

Following this process, President Gabriel Boric expressed his confidence in improving relations with the Altiplano country.

“I expect Chile and Bolivia can close this chapter of a dispute of more than 20 years and come to a new step in bilateral relations,” he said in that instance.
