Chile “should reject the new draft Constitution”, says ‘The Economist’

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Economist, a prestigious British magazine, published an article entitled “Voters should reject Chile’s new draft constitution” in its online edition.

In its lines, it argued a series of reasons, among them that the final proposal is “fiscally irresponsible”.

In the text, the magazine specified that the document finally omitted “some of the worst ideas” that the Convention “dominated by the leftists” had put on the table; and that “some praiseworthy ideas” did emerge.

On the other hand, it explained that the eventual new Magna Carta is “excessively progressive”, “absurdly” long, and “fiscally irresponsible” since it could “shoot up the budget” to finance certain socioeconomic aspects.

In this line, it pointed out -for example- that the creation of new organizations is proposed “without thinking much about how to finance them”.

Finally, the British publication commented that “rejecting” sounds “uninspiring” for those who marched during the social revolt but that this “is the long-term option for Chile to be prosperous and governable”.
