Bolsonaro says, Brazil will be self-sufficient in wheat production

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said today, 30, that Brazil is on track to become self-sufficient in wheat production, to the point, in ten years, to become a major exporter of the product. The statement was made in Campo Grande (MS), where he attended the inauguration of 300 houses.

In his speech, the President reiterated the concern of several countries to ensure the food security of their populations and that, in this regard, the policy directed to this sector is as important as that of defending the national territory.

“We can live without many things, but we cannot survive without food,” he said. “That’s why, next to the Ministry of Defense, the most important ministry is the Ministry of Agriculture,” he added when highlighting the importance of this sector for the country’s economic development.

The president then said Brazil is on its way to ending its dependence on foreign wheat. “Who would say that Brazil will achieve self-sufficiency in wheat? In 10 years, we will export the equivalent of what we consume in Brazil because productivity is increasing,” he added, without elaborating on the projected scenario.
