Brazil: Number of rapes of LGBTQIA+ people grew 88% in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rape crimes against the LGBTQIA+ population grew 88.4% between 2020 and 2021, revealed the Brazilian Yearbook of Public Security on June 28, a document prepared by the Brazilian Forum on Public Security.

In absolute numbers, the registration of rapes increased from 95 notifications in 2020 to 179 last year. However, the actual number of cases should be even higher because only the information provided by the state public safety departments and the police was computed.

The balance, for example, does not include data from states like São Paulo, Bahia, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro, which did not provide or do not have detailed information on the subject.

Contrary to national data that revealed a drop in intentional deaths, the murders of LGBTQIA+ people registered a 7.2% increase last year.

Besides, it is also necessary to consider the underreporting of cases since many people do not register the violence they were victims of.

Contrary to national data that revealed a drop in intentional deaths, the murders of LGBTQIA+ people registered a 7.2% increase last year.

In 2020, the balance sheet computed 167 intentional homicides against this population. In 2021, 179 deaths were reported. The number should be even higher since several states failed to disclose this information.

Another crime that also showed a statistical increase was intentional bodily harm against LGBTQIA+ people, which went from 1,271 notifications to 1,719, an increase of 35.2%.
