Google connects to Chile: they install a submarine cable from Valparaíso to California and bring a digital wallet

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Google took Chile as a benchmark for Latin America and will bring Google Cloud and Google Wallet to the region, through a submarine cable that will run from Valparaíso to California, USA.

According to Diario Financiero, this will take place within the framework of the company’s efforts that promise to contribute US$1.2 billion in Latin America. The spotlights will focus on infrastructure and development of digital skills.

“Chile is a country that stands out for innovation, for embracing new technologies and foreign investment. An example of this is that the only data center that exists in Latin America is in Chile and we put it in Quilicura”, says Adriana Noreña, vice president for Latin America at Google.

Google Wallet would be launched in the country in the coming months, however, this would not be the first time it has arrived in Latin America. Previously, it had already been implemented in Brazil, and it is expected that it will soon be included in the entire region.

WHAT ARE GOOGLE’S PLANS FOR CHILE?

The company’s plan to bring these technological innovations to the country has to do with 4 fundamental pillars: development of digital skills, entrepreneurial ecosystem, infrastructure and inclusive and sustainable communities.

“Increasingly we are going to hire people for their skills and impact generation. In this, education, digital transformation and diversity are key”, Noreña highlighted.

Google’s vice president for Latin America also points out that the factors that led to choosing Chile as one of the first benchmarks in Latin America are related to areas of technology in which the country stands out.

Among them the implementation of 5G, online shopping and the wide market for smartphones. “The experience of Chilean retailers is quite advanced, as is the sophistication of customers in general,” she said.

“We all know that electronic commerce has boomed and the case of Chile is noteworthy, considering that it is expected to reach 21% of all retail sales by 2025,” she reported.
