Brazil: Demand for domestic flights dropped 9.9%

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On June 8, the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear) reported, in São Paulo, that the demand for domestic flights, measured in passengers-kilometer carried (RPK), had a drop of 9.9% in April, compared to the same month of 2019, based on data from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).

According to Abear, supply, calculated in seats-kilometer offered (ASK), had a 5.8% reduction in the same comparison.

The average occupancy rate of the airplanes was 78.4%, a reduction of 3.5 percentage points. In total, 6.1 million passengers were transported, down 16.2% compared to the same month in 2019.

In the international market, demand (RPK) fell by 34.2%, and supply (ASK) decreased by 33.9% compared to April 2019.

According to the association, comparing operational results of the domestic market between April and March showed a drop of 7.1% in demand (RPK) and 5.9% (ASK) in supply.

The average occupancy rate of airplanes dropped 1 percentage point. Demand (RPK) grew 5.4% in the international market, and supply (ASK) dropped 1.8% in the same comparisons.

Air cargo and mail transport decreased 11.3% in April compared to April 2019. In the international market, there was an increase of 12.7% in the same comparison.
