Peru collected 53% less revenue from agro-exports to Italy in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peru generated US$22 million with the export of agricultural products to the Italian market in 2021, which was 53% less than what was achieved in 2020.

With this, Peru remains behind other competitors such as Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia, part of the top 10, FreshFruit reported.

Italian agricultural imports totaled US$4.1 billion in fruit in 2021, reflecting a 3% growth compared to the previous year.

The products imported by Italy that stand out in this period are bananas, hazelnuts, and citrus fruits.

In its breakdown, bananas were the most imported in this market, totaling 818,823 tons in volume for US$541 million.

Peruvian shipments of this fruit to this destination totaled 9,053 tons for US$8 million, representing a growth of 33% in volume and 26% in total value exported compared to 2020, while its price fell by 6% compared to the previous year, reaching a price of US$0.88 per kilogram.

Hazelnuts arriving in Italy totaled 58,054 tons for US$389 million. It meant a 2% drop in volume and 15% in the value of imports due to a 7% reduction in the average price, which stood at US$7 per kilogram. Peru still has no share in shipments of this product to Italy.

Citrus fruits came in third place. Italy imported 351,154 tons for a value of US$364 million, representing a drop of 30% in volume and 28% in value.

Peru shipped 265 tons for US$342,000, which meant that shipments doubled compared to the previous year. On average, Peruvian exporters received US$1.3 per kilogram in 2021.
