Brazil: New driver’s license is launched this Wednesday, June 1

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The new model of Brazil’s National Driver’s License (CNH) goes into effect this Wednesday, June 1. The document will continue to be issued by the Detrans (State Traffic Departments).

The National Traffic Secretary, Frederico Moura Carneiro, will present the new model during a ceremony in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul.

The new version does not invalidate the current document, with the driver being able to keep the old model until its validity expires. Only drivers who renew their driver’s license or get a second copy as of June 1, 2022, will be obliged to use the model.

The adjustments in the local and national systems for implementing the new license have already been made.

CURRENT CNH X NEW CNH

One of the differences in the new CNH is in the colors. Unlike the predominantly green current model, the document will have graphic elements in yellow, making forgery and fraud more difficult.

It will also have elements with fluorescent paint that glows in the dark and items visible only with ultraviolet light.

At the bottom, a table with graphic elements of vehicles representing the category of the CNH has been added. According to Detran-AL (Alagoas state Department of Traffic), the new configuration “facilitates the interpretation” of traffic agents in other countries.

INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENT

In 1968 Brazil signed the Convention on Road Traffic in Vienna, Austria, which established an international model for driver’s licenses. The agreement was ratified in 1981 through a decree issued by then-president João Figueiredo (1979-1985).

According to Frederico Carneiro, the new version brings Brazil closer to the convention’s signatories. The standard adopted in countries like Argentina, the United States, and Ireland is a plastic driver’s license, with the driver’s information distributed on nine lines.

With the change, published in the Official Federal Gazette (DOU) on December 23, 2021, the new CNH brings more international requirements. The document will be printed in Portuguese, Spanish, and English and have an international code used in passports.

SOCIAL NAME

The new license will also allow the inclusion of the social name and affective filiation. From now on, the driver will be able to choose the name displayed on his document and use the name of his legally recognized parents without the need for them to be biological parents.

With the social name, transvestites and transsexuals will be able to choose how they wish to be identified, as long as they present their identity document with their social and civil names.

QR CODE

The new driver’s license will also have a QR code on the back containing driver information. The element was determined in 2017 by a resolution of Contran (National Transit Council) to facilitate the identification of fake drivers’ licenses by police and traffic agents.
