Brazil already has US$37 billion of investments contracted for 2022

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil already has R$188 billion (US$37 billion) in investments contracted for 2022. These are projects in energy, transport, and telecommunications signed by the private sector through privatizations and concessions.

The government projects R$860 billion (US$168 billion) in contracted investments for the next ten years. The number should rise as new partnerships are made with investors, such as entrepreneurs and funds. That is what the Investment Monitor of the Ministry of Economy, launched on May 9, points out. The digital platform was developed in a partnership between the government and the Inter-American Development Bank with financial support from the British government.

The government believes that pro-market reforms are needed to increase the country’s productivity and competitiveness.

Special Secretary Daniella Marques (Productivity) said that the Ministry of Infrastructure, for example, cannot execute more than R$12 billion to R$15 billion per year. The number is low compared to the country’s needs, and the federal government doesn’t have enough resources to make more investments. That is why the search for money from the private sector.

In the economic team’s view, urban mobility and sanitation are the areas that need greater investments in the coming years, and new projects must be structured along these lines to attract investors.

Marques said that Brazil is working on launching a provisional measure with changes to attract the sector’s development in the coming years.

She said that a few players concentrate 90% of the global production, and Brazil wants to be among the manufacturers.
