Brazil’s Ibovespa heads for longest losing streak in 15 months

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – If the decline observed in today’s trading session is confirmed, Ibovespa will have its sixth consecutive session of losses, a fact that has not occurred since January 2021. During this period, the cumulative decline is 6.05%.

In addition to the January 2021 sequence, in recent years there have been other periods of losses of the same duration in January 2020 and September 2017. Last year, the cumulative depreciation in six trading sessions was 4.40%, in 2020 the decline was 2.58% and in 2017 it was 3.20%.

The last time that the main index of the local stock exchange recorded seven consecutive sessions of losses was in May 2016, a period in which the Ibovespa reached a low of 7.34%.

In today’s trading session, near 14h10, the index quoted low of 1.08%, trading at 109.883 points, the lowest level in more than a month.

Stocks linked to commodities put renewed pressure on the index on fears of lower economic growth in China and faster rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed). CSN ON fell 4.45%, Gerdau PN fell 3.71%, Gerdau Metalúrgica fell 3.50% and Vale ON lost 2.72%.
