Boric, former student leader, takes office as president of polarized Chile on Friday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The leftist politician takes over the country’s leadership after defeating conservative candidate Jose Antonio Kast in last December’s elections. Boric received 55.86% of the valid votes compared to 44.14% for Kast.

A native of the southern region of Magallanes, Boric is a descendant of Croatian immigrants and studied law at the University of Chile.

A former student leader, he was a member of parliament and one of the founders of the Broad Front political coalition. He will not find it easy to unite this polarized country.

He will be the youngest president in Chile’s history. Born on February 11, 1986, Boric is the son of Luis Javier Boric and María Soledad Font.

BRAZIL AT THE INAUGURATION

The Vice President of the Republic, Hamilton Mourão, will attend the inauguration ceremony of the new President of Chile.

On Thursday (10), Mourão met with the president-elect of the neighboring country.

According to a recording of the meeting posted on the Vice Presidency’s social networks, the general stressed the importance of economic and trade relations between the two countries and reiterated Brazil’s willingness to deepen cooperation and dialogue with its South American partner.
