Chile: decline in retail sales with lowest growth in almost a year

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Retail sales rose 14.5% year-on-year in January, the National Chamber of Commerce (CNC) reported Monday, the smallest increase in the past 11 months. The indicator showed the same change with and without supermarkets.

“The weekly thermometer of retail sales compiled by the CNC’s study department shows that retail sales in the fourth week of this year (Jan. 24-30) increased by 21.8% compared to the same week in 2021, which is the same as the increase in the third week, and that sales excluding supermarkets increased by 27.3%,” the CNC said.

“Specialized stores marked an annual increase of 51.3% in week 4, while non-specialized and supermarkets, with a higher comparison base, recorded annual increases of 12.6% and 15.6%, respectively,” it added.

Specialty stores (generally mid-sized stores selling a single merchandise category) recorded a weekly increase of 1.5%, and non-specialty stores (department stores/wholesale stores) registered an increase of 3.8%. Supermarkets posted a 4.3% increase over the third week of 2022.

The CNC added that analyzing the result compared to the previous week, retail sales in the fourth week of this year increased by 3.6% compared to the third week, while excluding the category of supermarkets recorded a weekly increase of 2.9%.
