Shooting disrupts train service in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A shooting in the municipalities of Cidade Alta, Cinco Bocas, and Pica-pau, in Cordovil and Brás de Pina, in the favela-ridden northern zone of Rio de Janeiro, has disrupted train service on a section of the Saracuruna branch line of concessionaire SuperVia.

According to the company, service resumed at 6 a.m. only on the section between Central do Brasil stations in the city center and Penha in the north zone.

Operations were suspended on the Vila Inhomirim and Guapimirim extension lines. The concessionaire reported that 11 stations were closed between Penha Circular and Saracuruna.

The train did not run in the extension stations, but there was no need to close the station. “This measure is to ensure the integrity of customers and employees of the concessionaire.”
