Bolivia: internal disputes put President Luis Arce’s administration to the test

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, has decided to keep his government team intact, even though in the last few days, social organizations -which support the ruling party Movimiento Al Socialismo- have publicly expressed their desire for changes in the ministerial cabinet.

That, amid criticisms to the management of some officials, especially to the Minister of Government Eduardo Del Castillo, which is showing the frictions within the ruling party, according to analysts consulted by Voz de América.

“There is an intense struggle of at least three groups within the Movement Towards Socialism. It is happening in this scenario where Evo Morales is already dispensable. He is no longer the undisputed leader, ” explained the political analyst Rolando Tellería.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE PLURINATIONAL STATE

Thirteen years after creating the Plurinational State, celebrated last Saturday, January 22, there were no cabinet movements to which Bolivians were accustomed by former President Evo Morales, Arce‘s predecessor.

Arce, however, opted this time to maintain confidence in his team and focus his speech on the economic and social model he is carrying forward, predicting that Bolivia will grow 6% in 2022.

“Bolivia is already on the path of growth and economic development”, said Arce.

WHAT DOES PART OF THE OPPOSITION SAY?

In response, the opposition deputy of Comunidad Ciudadana, Alejandro Reyes, criticized that the president “does not see the country’s reality.”

“He does not convince (…) with economic figures, with demagogy ahead without understanding what is happening in the streets (…) the economic reactivation only remains in discourse”, exposed Reyes.

POLITICAL CONNOTATION

Arce took office in November 2020.

Analyst Tellería considered that this scenario has a political connotation that is projected to 2025.

“Within the Movement Towards Socialism, all these struggles aim to define who could eventually be the candidate for 2025”, explained the expert.

President Arce called for unity and assured that his party’s struggle would not succeed “if there were individual ambitions and internal confrontations”.
