Bolsonaro says Suriname is willing to give Brazil preference in oil exploitation

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL –  Bolsonaro is on an official visit to Suriname and on January 20 met with the country’s president, Chandrikapersad Santokhi. The Brazilian President traveled along with Minister of Infrastructure Tarcisio Freitas and Minister of Mines and Energy Bento Albuquerque.

Albuquerque recalled that in Suriname and Guyana there are proven reserves equivalent to 40% of the whole Brazilian pre-salt: “It is a lot of oil, a lot of gas in these countries,” he said.

He recalled that Brazil has experience in the exploitation of oil fields, the necessary technological development, patents, knowledge in environmental protection, among other aspects, and therefore expects to benefit from the relationship with these countries.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the two countries committed to exchange information on “national energy plans and exchange of experiences in regulatory matters in the oil and gas sector.”

The offer of potential services related to the energy sector in Brazil is also expected, in response to the needs of the northern states, which have very precarious energy infrastructures.
