Brazil: Portonave terminal in Navegantes port in Santa Catarina records the highest growth in its history in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Portonave terminal recorded a growth of 29% in 2021, corresponding to an increase in throughput of 259,372 TEUs compared to 2020. In this way, the port company achieved the highest result in its history, with 1.1 million TEUs.

According to a report by the National Agency for River Transport (ANTAQ), Portonave maintained its leading position in productivity in Brazil for the third consecutive year.

In imports and exports, the Port of Navegantes continues to be the leader in container handling in southern Brazil, ranking second among ports in the same analysis, according to the port company, based on information from Datamar, a maritime trade consulting firm.

In terms of exports, 77% of the products handled were wood and derivatives, and the shipment of frozen proteins abroad also registered a growth of 18.8%.

As for imports, the growth was 38.6%, with chemical products, plastics and derivatives, and textiles accounting for 57% of the total imported cargo.

In this regard, the commercial director, Rodrigo Gomes, pointed out that “in the 14 years of its existence, the port has achieved a historic turnover of 1 million TEUs. We also ended the year with the best number of refrigerator exports in recent years, with an increase of 18.8%. We successfully overcame the challenges of the pandemic and will continue to rise in 2022.”

Maneuvers at the new Evolution Basin – which opened in 2020 – and the release of night maneuvers contributed to these numbers. A total of 608 vessels docked at the Port of Navegantes in 2021, including 109 vessels longer than 306 meters.

The Brazilian terminal has three berths on a 900-meter quay, as well as a 400,000-square-meter shipyard with a handling capacity of 1.3 million TEUs per year and more than 2,430 refrigeration points.
