Image of Christ the Redeemer to represent the symbol of Oxford’s campus in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Chosen to host one of Oxford University’s campuses in Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, December 30, delivered the logo that will be the symbol of one of the world’s best educational institutions.

The design, created by Rio’s City Hall and approved by the UK university, features the image of Christ the Redeemer and waves symbolizing the sea, along with the name “Oxford Brazil Unit.”

The design was delivered in a ceremony at the City Palace, in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, by Municipal Education Secretary Renan Ferreirinha, to researcher Sue Ann Clemens, the university’s representative and responsible for bringing the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine studies to Brazil.

Brazil was chosen to be the first country to host the institution’s first campus outside the UK. The goal is to promote the training of students and researchers focused on the development of vaccines and medicines.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between Oxford University and Brazil for the production of vaccines against Covid-19. In addition to the Brazilian government and the university, the project is sponsored by the British government, the University of Siena, in Italy, the Institute for Global Health, and the International Vaccines Institute.

The Oxford campus will operate at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation’s (Fiocruz) Carlos Chagas Institute (ICC). The first step will be to set up a work team hired directly by Oxford. After that, this team will continue the study evaluating a third full or fractioned dose of Covid-19 vaccines in previously vaccinated adults.

The research will be completely independent of the government, with funding from other financial institutions.
