Chicken export: Brazil to have the highest growth globally in 2022

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Among the leading world players in chicken exports, Brazil should show the highest growth in 2022, according to ABPA, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association.

The entity’s projections are based on data from the USDA, United States Department of Agriculture, evidencing that Brazil will export 4.75 million tons of poultry protein in 2022, representing a growth of 5% compared to 4.58 million tons expected to be exported in 2021.

The United States, the world’s second-largest exporter of poultry meat, should export 3.387 million tons in 2022, representing a 1% decrease compared to the 3.421 million tons exported in 2021.

According to Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA, costs for poultry production in the U.S. should remain at the current level, despite the higher corn supply expected for the 2021/2022 crop year, as well as domestic demand for chicken meat should remain high.

From January to November 2021, Brazil exported 4.199 million tons of poultry meat.

As for the EU, export projections should grow 3% in 2022, reaching 1.825 million tons, a volume still 10% lower than the 2.033 million tons exported in 2020. The region will face severe difficulties shipping its poultry products to other countries due to the high rate of avian influenza outbreaks.

To date, 40 outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza have been reported in the United Kingdom, where around 500,000 birds were culled in 2021. In Poland, 21 outbreaks of the disease have been reported, leading to the stamping out of 1 million birds. More than 200 cases were reported in various parts of Germany, in addition to many other countries in Europe that have been reporting outbreaks of the disease.
