Economy Minister: Covid-19 is “entirely under control” in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Despite uncertainties about the spread of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus worldwide, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes on Wednesday, December 8, said that the Covid-19 pandemic is fully under control in Brazil.

“Our mass vaccination has advanced and we have already protected 80% of Brazilians (adults) with two doses. According to the Ministry of Health, the disease is under control, fully under control. Brazilians are returning to work safely,” he said during a virtual appearance at an Apex event in Miami. The recorded transcript of the event was released afterwards.

According to data disclosed on Tuesday, December 7, by the Brazilian media consortium, Brazil has a total of 137,628,806 people, or 64.5% of the total population, fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Amid a clash with the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) over border restrictions due to Covid-19, the government on Tuesday announced an ordinance to quarantine for 5 days anyone entering Brazil who has not been vaccinated.

Immunized travelers, on the other hand, will not be required to undergo quarantine. Travelers will still need to present a negative RT-PCR test done 72 hours before entering the country.
