Rio de Janeiro: Flamengo soccer player fatally runs over delivery man

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The election day of traditional Brazilian soccer club Flamengo was changed by the news that came from the country’s authorities. While the club president was being re-elected, a first-team player fatally ran over a bicycle messenger.

Ramon Ramos, the young outside defender, barely 20 years old, ran over the 30-year-old victim with his car. The force of the impact was so great that the cyclist died while being transported to the hospital, without the medical services being able to do anything.

Ramon Ramos, according to local media reports, was riding in his car with a woman. The accident took place in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. At around 8:30 PM the player informed the emergency services of what had happened.

He reportedly cooperated fully and informed the authorities about the incident himself. Despite his help, the 30-year-old delivery man could not survive and died during transport to the hospital.

There is little information on how the accident occurred. However, Flamengo has confirmed that they fully support their player for what happened since, according to their information, Ramon Ramos was not at fault for the impact. The player, in fact, is not in custody after giving a statement on Saturday night.

“He is fine, calm, as much as possible, giving testimony. It is an unfortunate accident. From the first information we had, our athlete was not at fault,” acknowledged the vice president of Flamengo, Rodrigo Dunshee, speaking to Globo.

For his part, Rodolfo Landim, who moments before hearing the news was celebrating his re-election as president of Flamengo, confirmed that they were going to give all their legal and institutional support to Ramon Ramos.

“He is an exemplary sportsman, with exemplary behavior. In situations like this, it is obvious that we will provide full support,” reports the Brazilian media.

Marcos Braz, another of Flamengo’s top officials, also explained the collaboration that Ramon Ramos had shown with the authorities after the fatal accident. “He was calm, sad, but it seems that he stopped, called, I think, the ambulance, the firemen, showed up with the lawyer…. He did all the steps that any citizen would have to do,” said the leader.

Ramon Ramos, born in 2001 and who came to the first team through the Flamengo youth academy, is one of the regular players in the Brazilian team. Although he is not a regular starter, his young age and his presence in the eleven reflect his importance at the club. the defender has made 12 appearances in recent weeks.
