Brazil’s feminists call for “Bolsonaro Never Again” march

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Social and feminist organizations in Brazil on Wednesday (1) called for a massive mobilization for next Saturday, December 4, under the slogan “Bolsonaro Never Again,” calling for the President’s impeachment trial and rejection of his administration.

“The attack that women have suffered under Bolsonaro’s government is indisputable,” states the call signed by 29 organizations, among them the Brazilian Women’s Articulation (AMB), the World March of Women (MMM), the Unified Black Movement (MNU), the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and the Black Union for Equality (Unegro).

Inspired by the campaign “Ele Não” (Not Him), which organized massive feminist mobilizations against Jair Bolsonaro during the 2018 election period, this new call aims to defend fundamental rights, said the “Bolsonaro Out!” National Campaign.

“The women and feminist organizations in charge of the National Campaign have been working on creating the Women’s Mobilization Day: “Bolsonaro Never Again,” the organization expressed in the call.

Similarly, the National Campaign denounced the rise of hunger in Brazil and the need for care that falls on women, the loss of income and jobs, “the escalation of sexist violence in the home, in public life, in the cities, in the countryside.”

According to Semperviva Feminist Organization and World March of Women activist Sonia Coelho, “it is important to remove Bolsonaro, even if only one day before the end of his government,” because “it is impossible to continue living with a government that destroys lives and rights every day,” she said.

Referring to Bolsonaro’s policies, the National Campaign alleges an ultra-neoliberal death project that is racist and undermines all existential possibilities, in particular for blacks and the poor.

Federal deputy from the far-left Socialism and Equality Party (PSOL) Talíria Petrone said “that the black and indigenous movements have been the main spokespersons of the struggle against Bolsonarism and Bolsonaro. The main task of these movements and the anti-racist struggle is to overthrow Bolsonaro and fight Bolsonarism.”

“To rebuild Brazil, to breathe, on this path to 2022 we need to continue the struggle for our people. In the fight against this current model of public security. In the fight against hunger, for the vaccine and to overthrow Bolsonaro now, for impeachment,” Petrone stressed.

As a challenge of the struggle in Brazil, Talíria Petrone said that “it is also the task of the Brazilian black movement and the PSOL to work for left-wing unity to fight Bolsonaro. This is also an anti-racist agenda,” she noted.
