Unemployment drops in 20 of Brazil’s 27 states between second and third quarters

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The unemployment rate posted a statistically significant drop in 20 of the 27 Brazilian states between the second and third quarters, according to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Continuous), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The highest unemployment rates were found in Pernambuco (19.3%), Bahia (18.7%), Amapá (17.5%), Alagoas (17.1%) and Sergipe (17.0%). The lowest results were seen in Santa Catarina (5.3%), Mato Grosso (6.6%), Mato Grosso do Sul (7.6%), Rondônia (7.8%) and Paraná (8.0%).

The unemployment rate in the state of São Paulo stood at 13.4% in the third quarter, and at 15.9% in Rio de Janeiro.

INFORMALITY

The informality rate reached 40.6% nationwide. The highest results occurred in Pará (62.2%), Amazonas (59.6%) and Maranhão (59.3%). The places with the lowest rates of informality were Santa Catarina (26,6%), São Paulo (30,6%) and the Federal District (31,8%).
