Brazil’s Bolsonaro confirms joining PL on November 30: “It’s all settled”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Wednesday, November 24, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed that he will join the Liberal Party (PL) next Tuesday, November 30, as announced by the party last Tuesday, November 23.

“It’s all settled,” the President said as he walked from the Planalto Palace to the Chamber of Deputies to attend the 2021 Legislative Merit Medal ceremony.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the President’s son, is also expected to join PL on November 30, the same day that President Jair Bolsonaro will finally celebrate his “marriage” to the party.

Flávio Bolsonaro will join his third party since being elected senator in 2018 under PSL. He has passed through Republicanos and joined Patriota in May 2021, as a way to prepare the party for his father’s arrival.

However, an agreement between the President and the Patriota party failed to prosper and Flávio remained on his own in the party. The strategy then became to wait for his father’s decision, and then switch again.

With the arrival of the presidential family, the Liberal Party is now discussing growth prospects for 2022. Governor Cláudio Castro will be its candidate for the government of Rio de Janeiro, and former soccer star Romário will run for reelection in the Senate.

One of the names being touted as Castro’s running mate is Belford Roxo mayor Waguinho, who will take control of União Brasil, a party to be created from the merger between DEM and PSL parties.
