Armed Forces begin third phase of largest military training operation in Brazil in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Under the Ministry of Defense’s coordination, approximately 5,000 military personnel, 1,000 vehicles, airplanes and helicopters from the Navy, Army, and Air Force (FAB) are taking part in the cities of Rosário do Sul and Bagé, in Rio Grande do Sul.

At the São Borja Training Field, in Rosário do Sul, aerial attack activities were held with fighter planes, water-course crossing and anti-aircraft defense, artillery, rockets from the Astros 2020 program, paratroopers’ jumping, and deployment of the Commando and Special Forces troops.

Until November 14, under the guidance of the Southern Military Command (CMS), Army headquarters located in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the commanders’ capacity to maintain a good level of awareness of the combat situation will be verified, with exercises in functional areas of personnel, operation, intelligence, logistics, mobility and counter-mobility, social communication, civil affairs, and fire.

Two Army divisions will be opposed in an activity of joint and individual critical actions, such as air-to-ground assault, air-to-mobile, special and intelligence operations in the same tactical context. The deployments of command and control means will be performed in a movement maneuver 200 km forward and 150 km deep.

The first phase of the operation, called Meridiano-Poti, was conducted in the state of Pará, under the responsibility of the Brazilian Air Force using its aircraft. The second phase, known as Dragão, was carried out by the Navy on the Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo coasts.
