RIO DE JANEIRO – From June 9th to August 9th the world of Michel Gondry’s comes to Rio in the form of ‘Be Kind Rewind’, an interactive exhibition at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. Gondry himself is also coming to open the exhibition on a date yet to be confirmed.

The French filmmaker, screenwriter and artist who won an Oscar for “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” invites participants to improvise their own films using his 13 customized scenarios.

They will follow the example of the cult 2008 movie that gives its name to the exhibition where the characters played by Jack Black and Mos Def recreate and shoot films that have disappeared from a video store in order not to disappoint the clients and the owner. The critics praised it as a love statement to the art of cinema.

The group of amateur filmmakers will gather at a workshop to learn how to plan the project and then will each be given a camera. The footage can last up to 20 minutes and should take place in chronological order. The editing will be made on the camera itself and the final product will be shown on a giant screen at the Cultural Centre and also be available in a “local rental store” such as that featured in the movie.

“Be Kind Rewind – The Exhibition” has already visited New York and São Paulo with huge success, and people who want to participate in the latest edition can register via the web (on a site that is still under construction) or at the CCBB itself. Along with the interactive exhibition there will be a festival of Gondry’s movies and debates about his work.

Michel Gondry is recognized worldwide for his creativity and vanguard’s outlook. He started directing video clips for the French band Oui Oui and met with Icelandic artist Björk in 1993. They started a formidable partnership in prize winning clips such as “Human Behaviour” and he has since collaborated with other high profile artists such as the White Stripes, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Beck and the Rolling Stones (for whom he directed the clip of “Like A Rolling Stone”, brilliantly combining frozen and slow motion images).

He quickly moved from music videos to the cinema and began to work alongside screenwriter Charlie Kaufman with whom he wrote the Oscar-winning script for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004). Gondry is also a successful commercial director and his advertisements have won several major awards.
