Covid-19: Senate committee investigating Brazil’s management of pandemic to charge Bolsonaro with numerous crimes

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The parliamentary inquiry committee (CPI) appointed by the Brazilian Senate to investigate the management of the Covid-19 pandemic will accuse President Jair Bolsonaro of nine crimes, including crimes against humanity.

According to the final report, reported by the Brazilian press, the committee also accuses him of committing an epidemic crime, violating preventive health measures, charlatanism as he promoted alternative cures, according to the Brazilian Penal Code, dereliction of duty, unlawful use of public funds, inciting crimes, falsifying private documents and crimes against humanity.

The final text of the commission calls for indictments of 68 individuals and companies. In addition to President Bolsonaro, the committee calls for the indictment of three of his sons, several ministers, former ministers, deputies, and business people.

The committee is expected to vote on the report next Tuesday. It does not have the power to impose indictments or penalties, but its report may trigger an investigation by the federal prosecutor general’s office.

According to Statista, the leading German company specializing in market and consumer data, Brazil ranks eighth in Latin America for deaths per million in the last seven days. It is better positioned than Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras. Worldwide, it ranks 39th.
