Brazil’s São Paulo government allows only vaccinated public back to soccer stadiums

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In small steps and without much noise, a two-tier society of vaccinated people with access to events and unvaccinated people without access is being implemented in São Paulo.

On Friday, The government of São Paulo state authorized the return of vaccinated fans to the [open-air] soccer stadiums, following what already occurs in other states with teams in the first division of the Brazilian Championship, such as Rio de Janeiro.

Vaccinated fans will be able to return to the games as of October 4th, initially with stadium capacity limited to 30% and later with an increase to 50%, advised the São Paulo government in a note.

Unvaccinated people are excluded and have to stay at home. The pressure to vaccinate is thus further increased.

“For entry into the stadiums, clubs must require proof of a complete vaccination scheme, i.e., two doses of the CoronaVac vaccine, AstraZeneca and Pfizer, or a single dose of Janssen,” the SP government said.

“Those who have not yet completed the vaccination scheme must have taken at least one dose of vaccine and present a negative test with a validity of 48h for those of the PCR type or 24h for antigen tests. The use of masks is mandatory in all sectors of the stadium.”

The decision to release only the vaccinated back was made by the scientific committee of the São Paulo government, since 98.19% of the adult population of the state is vaccinated with at least one dose, and 69.4% have already completed the vaccination scheme.
