Peru and Bolivia agree to create binational cabinet to advance common agenda

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The two presidents have announced an agreement to form a binational cabinet between the two countries’ cabinet councils to meet later this year.

“In a meeting with our brother president of Peru Pedro Castillo, we advanced in the negotiations to implement the Peru-Bolivia Binational Cabinet. We will work in committees to define details of this important meeting,” Arce explained on Twitter.

Arce met with Castillo on Saturday, on the occasion of his presence at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held in Mexico.

Castillo explained on Twitter that trade and social issues had also been discussed. “President Pedro Castillo and his Bolivian counterpart Luis Arce agreed to implement a Binational Cabinet for the remainder of the year. In addition, during the meeting they discussed energy, trade and social issues, for the benefit of the people of both countries,” he states.

The initiative to resume these binational meetings was proposed by Arce shortly after Castillo’s inauguration in July. At the time, Arce stressed that there are many ideological “coincidences” with Castillo and that it is important to “resume this forum” so that the “peoples may progress.”

The last cabinet between the two countries was held in 2019 in Peru.
