Azul Airlines intends to fly Brazilians to the coast by air taxi

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The company has an agreement with German startup Lilium that foresees the delivery of 220 electric landing vehicles – popularly called flying cars – at a cost of US$1 billion.

“How often have people taken 5 or 6 hours to reach the coast at the end of the year? If we can offer a vehicle that is 70% cheaper than a helicopter, that doesn’t burn carbon, and that will connect even more cities in Brazil, we won’t think twice to close the deal,” said Azul’s CEO John Rodgerson.

“Instead of wasting 6 hours in a car, people can instead take a 20-minute trip in one of these flying cars. If we have a safer, quieter machine, I’m sure many people will want to take it,” he noted. Lilium deliveries should begin in 2025 and Azul expects to start operations by 2026, after ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency) certification.
