Covid-19: Argentina shows 78.6% effectiveness of Russian Sputnik Light vaccine

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL -Experts stated that in Argentina, the first scientific study published for the Sputnik Light vaccine, the first component of Sputnik V against Covid-19, showed an efficacy of 78.6% in preventing infection against the disease.

“We found 78.6% in preventing infections and 84.8% in preventing deaths from coronavirus in the province of Buenos Aires,” reported specialist Santi Olszevicki, one of the scientists involved in the study carried out by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health and published in the journal EClinicalMedicine of The Lancet group.

However, experts recommend that “the complete vaccination scheme should be the standard of care as it confers maximum effectiveness.”

“The population over 80 years of age was not included in this study because, by May 1, 2021, more than 95% of this age group had already been vaccinated, leaving an insufficient number of unvaccinated subjects for comparison, which would defeat the purpose of the study,” the specialists indicated.

The research arose after analyzing data from 186,581 people between 60 and 79 years of age in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), of whom 40,387 had received the first dose of Sputnik Light.

“In this case, this work was carried out when the Delta variant was not yet a threat worldwide, there was a shortage of vaccines, and the world was debating whether to complete schedules or reach more people with one dose,” said Santi Olszevicki.
