Evo Morales accuses right-wing of blocking reconciliation in Bolivia

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – “We all want reconciliation in Bolivia but one based on justice, truth and reason, but Carlos Mesa and the right-wing continue to resort to lies to ensure impunity,” Morales tweeted.

The indigenous leader’s comment came amid controversy preceding a vote in parliament scheduled for September, in which the ruling Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) will seek the support of part of the opposition to authorize an accountability suit against ex-president Jeanine Áñez.

Mesa’s right-wing alliance Comunidad Ciudadana conditioned its potential support to this suit to a change of all Supreme Court Justices, further suggesting that Morales should also be prosecuted.

Áñez would be prosecuted by the left-wing government for having allegedly been the leader of the 2019 coup d’état and liable for massacres of political opponents and other crimes, while the opposition maintains a public denunciation of electoral fraud against Morales that same year, despite the fact that the Prosecutor General’s Office has dismissed the case due to lack of evidence.

In another tweet, Morales endorsed an investigation submitted over the weekend by the Comptroller General’s Office, which disqualified a report by the Organization of American States (OAS) on irregularities in the 2019 elections, which for the opposition would represent evidence of fraud.

Ex-president Mesa denies that in 2019 there was a coup in Bolivia and is also known for his references to the “gigantic” and “monumental” fraud allegedly committed by Morales.

Mesa was one of the first to call for the protests that led to the annulment of the 2019 elections won by Morales.
