Homicides in Brazil in 1st half 2021 down 8% from 1st half 2020 – Survey

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the first six months of 2021, there were 21,042 violent deaths in the country, compared to 22,838 in the same period last year.

The survey, which collects official data from 26 states and the Federal District, is part of the Violence Monitor – a partnership between the G1 website, the Center for Violence Studies at the University of São Paulo, and the Brazilian Public Security Forum.

Victims of intentional homicide (including femicides), robbery, and assault resulting in death were counted.

In the first half of this year, only six states increased homicides: two in the north (Roraima and Amazonas) and four in the northeast (Maranhão, Piauí, Paraíba, and Bahia). Roraima registered the largest increase: 40.4%. Ceará recorded the largest decrease: -28.8%.
