Rio de Janeiro has already vaccinated 83% of its homeless population

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the Street Clinics, a project of the Municipal Health Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro to care for the vulnerable population, 6,000 homeless people of the city have already been vaccinated, representing 83% of the population.

The vaccinations are carried out in municipal shelters, social welfare centers, family clinics, and street actions.

According to the last census of the homeless population, conducted at the end of 2020, approximately 7,272 people live on Rio de Janeiro’s streets. The project’s actions focus on the city’s downtown area, where most of the homeless people live.

The Street Clinic teams are composed of at least seven multidisciplinary professionals, including nurses and social workers. Immunization of the homeless population is one of the priority groups identified in the Ministry of Health’s National Immunization Plan.
