Tokyo 2020: Thiago Braz wins bronze for Brazil in pole vault

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz this Tuesday (3) won the bronze medal in the pole vault event at the Tokyo Olympics. The 27-year-old athlete’s best jump was 5.87 meters.

Initially, Thiago surpassed the 5.55m mark. Then the bar rose to 5.70m and 5.80m, until reaching 5.87m and surpassing 5.82m, the season’s best vault for him.

Braz was eliminated in the fight for gold when the bar reached 5.92m, failing to surpass it on his three attempts.

Sweden’s Armand Duplantis won the gold medal, setting a height of 6.02m, while American Christopher Nilsen reached 5.97m to garner silver.

This was the second medal won by Brazilian track and field athletes in Tokyo 2020. The first was won by São Paulo’s Alison dos Santos in the 400m hurdles, winning bronze with a time of 46s72.

In the shot put, Santa Catarina’s Darlan Romani on Tuesday won a spot in the Tokyo Olympics final. His shot reached 21.31m, 11 cm more than required to advance in the competition. The 30-year-old athlete had the second best performance in the Group A qualifying round.

The final will be held on Friday, August 6 at 11:05 AM (Brasília time) at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. Romani is the South American record-holder in the shot put and is placed 11th in the sport’s world ranking.

In the 4th heat of the 110-meter hurdles, Rafael Pereira, from Minas Gerais, made it to the semifinals. Only the top 4 in each heat were still in the race for the podium and the Brazilian came in 3rd, with a time of 13s46. He will run in the semifinals Tuesday (3) at 11:16 PM (Brasília time).

Brazilian Eduardo de Deus failed to advance in this event. The 25-year-old from São Paulo came in 8th place in heat 5, with a time of 13s18. The same happened to Rio de Janeiro’s Gabriel Constantino, who finished 5th in heat 1 with a time of 13s55.
