Rio de Janeiro records 82% increase in divorces in first half of 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of divorces registered in the largest registry office in Rio de Janeiro increased by 82% in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year.

An exclusive survey conducted by the 15th Notary’s Office shows that in the first half of the year, the number of notarized divorces and dissolutions of fixed partnerships reached 395.

In the same period of 2020, at the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic, 217 records of this type were certified.

According to the assessment of Jessica Vianna, a lawyer specializing in family law, the intense cohabitation imposed by social isolation measures to combat the virus contributed to the dissolution of relationships.

“Coexistence contributed to the end of many relationships, couples who had been together for over 40 years concluded that they could no longer continue their marriage,” says the lawyer, who also ended a relationship during the pandemic.

She points out that many cases in the pandemic are amicable. “Both are sure of the need for separation and have already made proposals for an amicable solution,” she says.

The notary of Office 15, Fernanda Leitão, confirms the analysis of Jéssica Vianna. In her opinion, social isolation has made some relationships untenable, which is also reflected in the notary’s books.
