Rio de Janeiro to permit stadiums and nightclubs at 50% occupancy in September

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes and the city’s Health Secretary Daniel Soranz announced Thursday (29) they would relax restriction measures against Covid-19.

The plan, titled “Rio again, a year of reunions,” is divided into three phases and was classified as “conservative” by the mayor and the secretary. When they begin will depend on the inoculation deemed necessary by the secretariat for each phase.

“We’re going to be conservative on flexibility. We think releasing everything at once can be problematic,” said Daniel Soranz, referring to the opening in the United Kingdom earlier this month.

In the first phase, scheduled for September 2, stadiums, nightclubs, discos, and concert halls may be released, with up to 50% occupancy. Events in open environments are also envisaged, with no attendance limit.

Soranz explained that vaccination coverage should be in line with City Hall projections at the start of the first phase, with 54% of the adult population fully vaccinated and 91% vaccinated with at least one dose.

The second relaxation phase is scheduled for Octpber 17, with unrestricted occupancy in stadiums, nightclubs, discos, and concert halls.

The third phase, scheduled for November 15, includes free movement without capacity or distance restrictions and mandatory use of masks only in public transportation and health care facilities.

This will require 90% of the adult population to be fully vaccinated, with a minimum of 93% with the first dose.
