Brazil rises 53 places in UN cybersecurity ranking in 2020

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has risen 53 places in a global digital security ranking compiled by the International Telecommunications Union, the UN agency for the technology sector.

The 2020 edition of the study, called the Global Cybersecurity Index, was released this week and showed that the country rose from 71st to 18th among 193 countries.

The document evaluates measures taken by national governments to increase digital security and address cyber risks surrounding their official portals. Among countries in the Americas, Brazil ranks third, behind the United States and Canada.

This improvement occurs despite repeated attempts to penetrate the websites of Brazilian government agencies this year. One of the most emblematic was the attempt to penetrate the systems of the federal Supreme Court (STF), which had to shut down its own website in early May to prevent the attack.

The websites of the gov.br platform, the portals linked to the federal government, currently have 107 million users. Around 3,000 digital services available to citizens require the so-called double security factor.
