RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The balance of health violations recorded in the city in the first half of 2021 has been disclosed – and the number of people detected by the Municipal Guard without a mask on the streets, public areas and commercial establishments is striking.
Of the 5,280 fines issued between January and June during enforcement actions to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the city, 4,602 concerned mask wear violations.
According to a municipal decree from May 2020, failure to comply with this law can cost the offender R$562.42 (US$111).
The amount of fines computed in this period is completed with the following figures and grounds: 129 essential establishments in activity beyond authorized times; 216 for crowds in establishments, including lines; 101 in essential establishments and activities in violation of predetermined conditions; and 232 for the unauthorized operation of establishments and activities.
