Brazil’s São Paulo stock exchange starts the week on the rise, hits new all-time high

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The São Paulo stock exchange started the week on the rise and scored a new all-time high after its Ibovespa index, the benchmark of the trading floor, advanced 0.50% and stood at 130,776 points at the close of trading on Monday, June 7.

After a week of records, the São Paulo stock exchange renewed its maximum, driven by the airline sector and amid better market estimates of a more robust recovery of Latin America’s largest economy, which now points to a growth of over 4 % for the Brazilian GDP for 2021.

With an appreciation of 5.57%, the preferred shares of the airline Azul led the biggest gains of the day, which also included the preferred shares of Gol, another of the country’s three main airlines, which in turn rose by 3.93%.

The ordinary shares of the cosmetics company Natura (+4.46%) and the unitary shares of the energy company Energisa (+4.21%) also ended the session in positive territory.

On the other side of the coin, the ordinary shares of the supermarket network Pao de Açúcar were the ones that lost the most value on Monday, with a fall of 4.07%.

Behind, the shares which depreciated the most were the common shares of the oil company PetroRio (-3.90%), the unitary shares of the bank Inter (-3.71%), and the common shares of the steel company Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (-2.96%).

As usual in the São Paulo Stock Exchange, the ordinary shares of the mining company Vale, which fell 0.97%, and the preferred shares of the state-owned oil company Petrobras, which fell 0.74%, were the most traded shares of the day.

The volume of business on the São Paulo stock exchange exceeded R$34.1 billion (some US$6.7 billion)  on Monday due to 4,029,658 financial operations.

In the exchange market, the US dollar closed close to stability (+0.02%) against the Brazilian real and ended the day quoted at 5.034 reais for buying and selling at the commercial exchange rate.
