Living in Brazil during the pandemic is worse than in India – Bloomberg Covid Resilience

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Bloomberg’s Covid Resilience Ranking assesses the situation in 53 countries with respect to the control of the coronavirus pandemic and lists the best and worst places to live in this context. In the updated edition of its report, Brazil is ranked 51st.

Behind Brazil are only Colombia and Argentina. Despite high death rates – which are now beginning to drop – caused by the second wave of the virus, and only 3% of the population vaccinated against it, India was ahead of Brazil, ranked 50th.

In May, Argentina plunged to last place, according to Bloomberg, due to the surge in the number of coronavirus infections, which led to a more severe lockdown. “The question is whether new variants caused by outbreaks in India and Latin America will disrupt the pursuit of normalcy in places like the United States and Israel, and whether Asia can catch up in the vaccination race,” the report said.

Colombia, the next-to-worst country in which to be during the pandemic, is experiencing widespread social unrest with street demonstrations coupled with the impacts of the Covid-19 health crisis. The protests began when the population took a stand against a tax reform.

According to data from Bloomberg, Brazil moved up two positions, which means it was once considered the worst country to be in during the pandemic. The slight climb is due to stable death and infection rates after the second wave of the disease in the nation. However, health experts and politicians are predicting a third wave soon.

In contrast, other countries around the world have been handling the health crisis well. New Zealand has retaken the 1st place in the ranking, which was held last month by Singapore, currently in 2nd place. The Asian city-state was forced to take measures to prevent new cases of Covid-19 and has not progressed with vaccination.

Australia ranks 3rd, followed by Israel – both stable in these positions. South Korea rounds out the top 5 best places to live during the pandemic. The report also notes that the United States and some parts of Europe have moved up in the rankings, due to high immunization rates and barrier controls to prevent the spread of new strains of the disease.

The United Kingdom is ranked 11th, up seven places, and the United States has moved up four places to 13th.

Bloomberg’s Covid Resilience Ranking takes into account a wealth of data to determine the rankings. The list prioritizes disease coping efficacy, whether social and economic disruptions have been mitigated, mortality figures, testing and vaccination rates.

Bloomberg’s top 10 list is as follows:

New Zealand
Singapore
Australia
Israel
South Korea
Finland
Norway
Denmark
China
Hong Kong
