Prices of cassava root (manioc) in Brazil rise for 5th consecutive week

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (CEPEA) data, the supply of cassava root (manioc) was below industry demand last week, caused by challenges in advancing the harvest due to dry weather.

Rainfall was low in the center-south producing regions over the past 15 days, and abundant rainfall is not expected in the short term. Thus, the harvest has been carried out only in a few sandy areas.

In this scenario, the root’s values went up. Between April 19th and 23rd, the average nominal forward price per ton of cassava starch stood at R$447.41 (R$0.7781 per gram of starch in the 5 kg hydrostatic scale), 2% above the average of the previous period and the 5th consecutive high.
