Argentina registered 25% fewer farms in 2018 than in 2002

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec) released this Friday the final data of the 2018 Agricultural Census (CNA-18), in which a total of 221,207 agricultural establishments with a defined limit were registered throughout the country, 25.6% fewer than in the survey carried out in 2002.

In total, during the survey with a cut-off date of December 31, 2017, 249,663 agricultural establishments (EAP) were identified, of which 221,207 were declared with defined boundaries, i.e., where the producer declares the area worked.

Meanwhile, 22,340 were EAPs without defined boundaries -they are generally part of a larger identifiable unit, according to Indec- and 6,116 were mixed EAPs.

In 2002, Indec had surveyed 333,533 farms, of which 297,425 had a defined boundary, and 36,108 were without a defined boundary.

AREA AND MANAGEMENT

Regarding the total area of the farms, Indec surveyed 154,811,827 hectares.
Of this area, 31,899,871 hectares correspond to an area planted with some crop, where annual crops (70%), annual forage (10%), and perennial forage (11%) were mentioned.

On the other hand, 115,109,310 hectares correspond to areas used for other purposes, where it mentions pastures (62%), forests, and natural woodlands (26%).

Regarding the land tenure regime of the producers, the results showed that 69% of the surface of the plots corresponds to property. This is followed by leasing (19%), undivided succession (3%), occupation with permission (3%), de facto occupation (1%), and other tenure regimes (5%).

According to the CNA-18, in 91% of the EAPs surveyed, day-to-day management is carried out directly by the farmer or members of the company.

Meanwhile, the largest proportion (84%) of the PADs surveyed have human persons as their legal type, followed by legal persons (11%), unregistered partnerships (3%), and those that do not discriminate the legal type (2%).

In the EAPs with legal type human person or unregistered de facto partnership, there are 222,060 producers and partners, of which 21% are women, and 11% are under 40 years old, he said.

Regarding the labor force, Indec reported that 418,058 people worked permanently in the EAPs, 82% of whom are men.
