WHO: Brazil leads ranking of Covid-19 deaths in week to April 11, with 26.7% of world total

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil continued to record the highest number of Covid-19 deaths globally, with 26.7% of the global total, in the week ending April 11. However, deaths in the country due to the disease declined 3% from the previous week.

A new assessment by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that the pandemic killed an additional 76,773 people worldwide last week. The highest number of new deaths was in Brazil, with 20,512, or 9.7 new deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (the ratio was 3.5/100,000 in mid-February).

Last week, the United States was behind Brazil with 5,173 new deaths or 1.6 per 100,000 inhabitants.

India, in third place, with 4,652 new deaths from Covid-19, or 0.3% new deaths per 100,000 population), was up 51%.

Globally, new cases of covid-19 increased for the seventh consecutive week, with 4.5 million infections.

India leads this statistic, with 873,296 new cases, up 70%, showing that the country is increasingly becoming one of the disease’s global hotbeds.

The United States comes in second, with 468,395 new cases, a rise of 5%. And Brazil is third, with 463,092 new infections, down 8%.

In Turkey, in fourth place, the number of new cases reached 353,281 in one week, an increase of 33%. In France, there were 265,444 cases, a rise of 9%.
