Paraná state produces one third of Brazil’s chicken meat

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The data from the Livestock Production Statistics, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), are also confirmed by the Union of Poultry Products Industries of the State of Paraná (Sindiavipar), whose member industries were responsible for the slaughter of 1.95 billion birds last year, 4.5% more than in 2019, when 1.87 billion animals were slaughtered.

The entity represents 45 slaughterhouses and hatcheries in Paraná.

Even with the pandemic, which required adaptations and investments in the sector, producers celebrate last year’s good result.

“The food sector in Brazil proved that it is possible to adapt and maintain production under healthy conditions. We have always been very strict with hygiene, even before the pandemic emerged,” explains the president of Sindiavipar, Irineo da Costa Rodrigues.

EXPORT

Besides being the main producer, Paraná is also the state that exports the most chicken meat in the country. It accounts for 40.9% of Brazilian exports in the sector and sells to about 160 countries. This is almost double the exports of Santa Catarina, which is in second place, with 21.6% of exports. In the sequence comes Rio Grande do Sul, with 16.9%. Together, the three southern states concentrate 79.4% of Brazilian chicken sold to other countries.

Chicken, the second main product, after soybeans, and the main animal protein exported by Paraná, accounted for 21.6% of all Paraná’s foreign trade, with the sale of 1.59 billion tons last year. This total represented US$ 2.56 billion in the state trade balance, or R$ 14.71 billion at the current exchange rate.

The main destination is Asia, with China buying a quarter of the state’s chicken meat, or 410.18 million tons. Other important markets are the United Arab Emirates (117.77 million), Japan (114.1 million), Saudi Arabia (92.92 million) and South Korea (63 million). The data were compiled by the Instituto Paranaense de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (Ipardes), based on information from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy.

ANIMAL HEALTH

The recent changes in the sanitary status of Paraná will positively affect the entire Paraná meat chain, including poultry farming. This month, the state received a favorable opinion from the technical committee of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and took another step towards international recognition as an area free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, in addition to being recognized as an independent classical swine fever free zone.

“I imagine that Brazil can jump from 29 million tons of animal protein per year, excluding milk, to 35 million tons in 10 years. With this expectation, Paraná will go from 6 million to 7 million or 7.5 million tons. We are growing well in chicken, in which we are champions, and in swine, aiming for leadership,” assesses the state secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Norberto Ortigara. “The state shows other countries that it has volume, scale and quality, you can buy and eat without risk,” he says.
