In difficult 2020, Brazilians bought significantly more food and wine from Chile

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Chilean wine and food exports to Brazil grew even in the difficult year 2020. This is what the report from ProChile, an institution linked to the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, pointed out. In the case of wines, the increase in revenue was 24%, to US$185 million.

According to the report, Chilean hazelnut sales to Brazil jumped from US$1.32 million in 2019 to US$10.43 million last year, representing a 690% increase. “Chilean exports of this product have increased in recent years (…), considering the quality and proximity to reach the local market,” María Julia Riquelme, commercial director of ProChile Brasil, said in a statement.

Fruits

Chilean fruits also arrived in greater volume to Brazil last year. Dehydrated plums earned US$6.12 million in 2020, up from US$2.83 million in 2019 – a 116% increase.

Exports of fresh apples, meanwhile, increased 111%, to US$36.81 million, and those of fresh kiwi totaled US$17.35 million, up 17%.

Other products

Onions and garlic also stood out. Chilean onion sales to Brazil yielded US$ 8.65 million in 2020, against US$ 5.78 million in the previous year (50% more). Garlic, in turn, recorded the largest growth in the last five years: shipments jumped from US$ 3.58 million to US$ 8.77 million.

Revenue from Chile’s pork shipments to Brazil, finally, grew 8%, to US$4.03 million. In 2019, sales yielded US$3.74 million.
