Bolsonaro says Brazil will be self-sufficient in vaccine production

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – “We do not know for how long we will have to face this disease, but national production will ensure that we can vaccinate Brazilians every year, regardless of the variants that may arise,” said the president.

Bolsonaro said that by the end of the year more than 500 million doses will be available to vaccinate the entire population that needs to be immunized in the country. According to the Ministry of Health, this public totals 170 million people.

“We are making and will make 2021 the year of the vaccination of Brazilians. We are relentless in the fight against the coronavirus. This is the mission and we will accomplish it,” he stated.

Agreements

The president again stated that the country is faced with two major challenges, the virus and unemployment. “And at no time has the government failed to take important measures both to tackle the coronavirus and the chaos in the economy, which could generate unemployment and hunger,” he stressed.

Bolsonaro stressed that Brazil would use any vaccine approved by the competent bodies and talked about the contracts signed over a year for the production of immunizers.

The President cited the contract with Oxford University for the production, at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), of 100 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the agreement with the Covax Facility consortium for the production of 42 million doses.

He said he personally interceded with the manufacturer Pfizer for the anticipation of 100 million doses that will be delivered by September this year and also with Janssen, guaranteeing 38 million doses.

“I want to highlight that today we are the fifth most vaccinated country in the world. We have more than 14 million people vaccinated and more than 32 million doses of vaccine distributed to all states of the federation, thanks to the actions we took right at the beginning of the pandemic,” said Bolsonaro, citing the country’s ranking taking into account the absolute number of doses applied.

“By the end of the year, we will have reached more than 500 million doses to vaccinate the entire population. Very soon we will return to our normal lives. I express my solidarity with all those who have lost members of their families. May God comfort your hearts,” said Bolsonaro.
