Bolsonaro says “tyrants” are “tightening the noose” and “seizing people’s freedom”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The widespread narrative of the West regarding Covid-19 and the proper measures to combat it, remain at odds with what Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro believes.

In a speech to supporters crowded outside the Alvorada Palace this Sunday, March 21st, President Jair Bolsonaro said that some “tyrants are curtailing the freedom of many of you” and that “if anyone thinks that we will ever give up our freedom, they are wrong.” He did not directly mention governors and mayors who have decreed restrictive measures because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Supporters were gathered to congratulate the president on his 66th birthday this Sunday. Bolsonaro cut a cake while followers sang “Happy Birthday.”

“You can be sure, our army is olive green and so are you too,” he stated. “Count on the Armed Forces for democracy and freedom. They are tightening the noose, I’ll do anything for my people. That anything is what is in our Constitution, our democracy and our right to come and go. You can be sure, you can trust us.”

Faced with groups calling for his impeachment, Bolsonaro said, “As long as I am alive, as long as I am president, because only God can get me out of here, I will be with you.”
