Government and Banco do Brasil Unite to Expand Wi-Fi Access in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL -The Ministry of Communications has announced that Banco do Brasil branches will be part of a government program to expand Internet access. Some of the institution’s branches will be provided with free Wi-Fi, with the goal of taking wireless connections to the most diverse parts of Brazil.

The initiative is part of the Wi-Fi Brazil Program, which is installing access points in establishments such as healthcare centers, schools or indigenous communities in regions with poorly developed telecommunications infrastructure. The connection is done through Telebrás hotspots and satellites, with 12,800 locations currently involved.

For the time being, there is no information on how many branches, nor which cities, will be part of this new stage of the program.

According to Minister of Communications Fábio Faria, the plan is at its inception, but it is welcomed for providing such an essential tool as an Internet signal to remote regions of large urban centers.

In addition to taking Wi-Fi to cities where it has a branch, Banco do Brasil’s partnership should include other activities such as preparing clients for the digital world, conducting financial education consulting projects, and providing more banking services to rural producers who will not need to leave home.
